                              Warding Off The Sniffles

There was once a long-held belief that cold weather was the cause of the sniffles, coughs and flu symptoms that plague so many people every winter. The idea was so entrenched that we still talk about “catching a cold”, using the threat of illness to force our kids to put on a coat or wear that new scarf from Nanna.

Of course, we now know that the common cold and flu are both viral infections. Exposure to the cold is not in itself liable to make us sick. We still need to come into contact with the virus, usually from someone else already suffering from the illness.

A Chilly Diagnosis

However, winter isn’t entirely off the hook. Cold weather suppresses the immune system, reducing our ability to fight off a virus or infection when we do encounter it. And when the weather keeps more of us indoors, living and working closer together for longer periods in confined spaces, there is an increased chance of prolonged exposure to cold and flu sufferers.

One sniffle entering the house can be enough for cold and flu to spread through the family like wildfire. And one overly diligent worker who doesn’t believe in taking sick leave can soon bring down the productivity of the entire office.

Winter Wellness

Before flu season hits, talk to your doctor about a flu vaccine. This is particularly important for any elderly or pregnant family members.

And yes, Nanna’s woollen scarf is still a must (and the mittens, and the hat). Make sure your kids respect the cold, wrapping up before going outside and avoiding damp or wet weather where possible.

You can also give your family’s collective immune system a boost with nutrition and vitamin supplements, such as Amway’s NUTRIWAY. Vitamin C supplements can top up the body’s depleted reserves to help fight off infection, while a good multivitamin and iron supplement is also great for maintaining your kids’ health and energy levels. Just a couple of great tasting, chewable tablets every day can keep your kids fighting fit throughout the winter months.

After all, your kids don’t want to be sick during the winter holidays, and you don’t want your kids to fall sick during school.
